“El mismo amor, la misma fe, las mismas lágrimas”: iniciativas eclesiales en Ecuador para difundir y fortalecer el culto a la Virgen del Quinche en defensa de una República del Sagrado Corazón (1883-1889)

Within the conflict between church and state in the 19th century, the clergy and laymen tried to defend the establishment where the church had hegemony over the state and society. Between 1883 and 1889, Ecuador experienced some ecclesial initiatives to defend which stood for the idea of a Republic of the Sacred Heart. This article studies the case of Our Lady of El Quiche, a colonial massive cult, which was part of a process of re-appropriation and reinterpretation of its history. It also suffered a process of spreading and strengthening of its cult, linking with the image of the Republic, political conflicts and the power of the church. Between politics and religion, the discourses and practices of the clergy and the faithful show the intention of the church to shore up its own idea of a catholic Republic and an organized society. In this article, the use of manuscripts and printed sources give information to contrast multiple voices and multiple religious acts which performed a new local Mariology about El Quinche and a reaction to a context in which the religious hegemony and the participation of the clergy in politics were questioned; meanwhile the relations inside the church were recomposing. Dentro del conflicto Estado-Iglesia en el siglo XIX, el clero y el laicado intentaron defender el establishment que garantizaba la hegemonía de la Iglesia sobre el Estado y la sociedad. En ese marco, Ecuador experimentó algunas iniciativas eclesiales, entre 1883 y 1889, vinculadas a la idea de una República del Sagrado Corazón. El artículo analiza el caso de la Virgen del Quinche, culto colonial y de gran convocatoria, y el proceso de revalorización y reinterpretación de su historia. Este también experimentó otro de difusión y fortalecimiento del culto, vinculado a la imagen de la República, los conflictos políticos y el poder de la Iglesia. En el debate política-religión, los discursos y prácticas del clero y la feligresía permiten apreciar la intención de la Iglesia de apuntalar la idea de una república católica y una sociedad ordenada. En el presente artículo se citan y analizan manuscritos e impresos para contrastar múltiples voces y actos religiosos que performaron una mariología local sobre el Quinche y su reacción al contexto en el cual la hegemonía religiosa y la participación del clero en política fueron cuestionadas, y las relaciones dentro de la Iglesia estaban en recomposición
